The mook*

*A 114-paged one-time combination of a book and a magazine, in which more than 60 creative and talented people from 13½ different countries have come together to showcase their passion for collaborative work.

The idea

Fase 1: Narrative artistry
Writers write their weird little stories.

Fase 2: Musical artistry
Musicians and bands make their quaint little music, each song inspired by one of those strange little stories.

Fase 3: Visual artistry
A venturesome variety of visual artists take to their odd little canvases, computers and/or cameras, inspired by a paired story and song.

The result

An amazingly beautiful bundle of 14 surrealistic short stories, spread out over more then 100 pages of rich and full page art / designs by a team of photographers, illustrators, designers, painters and artists in general. Plus (!): 14 eclectic tracks and songs with a total playing time of almost 60 minutes, created by an even amount of (unsigned) bands and musicians, accompanying both story and visual representation. A real team effort!

Visual preview!

All in all 16 actual pages (that's 15% of the book as a whole!) are up for preview here. You can find the names of all artists that were involved below.

Audio preview!

Below an MP3 audio stream is included that offers you ±1 minute excerpts / previews of all tracks and songs in the correct playing order. The stream is encoded at 90 kbit/s VBR. The original audio files will be included with the mook* on a CD-R or through a USB flash drive of some sort. You can find the names of all artists and musicians that were involved at the bottom of this page.

{ Something went wrong, a Flash audio stream should be visible }

Non-profit?

Yes, no profit is to be made. There’s no pay or money involved for participating parties, including myself. No sponsors, no adds, no nothing. By applying for subsidies I will set out to scrape together enough financial support to print the first volume as a limited edition of 500 mooks. Selling them will be the financial backbone of future Orpion projects to come. All additional benefits or financial bonusses will be reinvested in those projects and won't be used for personal gain at any point.

Donate!

Because it is very likely that part of the initial funding of this project will be done by myself, any financial backing would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Use the keyword "Mook". Your donation will be substracted from the magazine's actual cost if you decide to purchase a copy!

Current status

There're seven phases to this project. Phase 4 (dummy and preview) is nearly finished. A preview of the music is still to come, but we're almost in:

Mook*, volume 2?

  • Due to the amount of work, effort and time that was necessary to get the first volume to this point, it isn't very likely that I will be breathing life into a second volume of this particular concept. My plan is now to make each instance, each issue of "Orpion" a unique collaborative project of its own. The first steps on this path are Orpion, a book.

If you have your own idea for a project or cool ideas you want to share with me, then, please, don't hesitate to contact me, though!
